In Georgian tradition living people are given an odd number of flowers, while even numbers are for funerals and remembrance. Many people still follow this rule today.

Why an odd number?

An odd number is said to stand for living, moving energy and joy, an even number for completion and rest. So for a birthday, a date or a celebration people give an odd number of flowers: 3, 5, 7 or more.

  • For the living: an odd number
  • For remembrance: an even number
  • With big bouquets, over twelve, the rule is less strict

Is it the same in other countries?

Not everywhere. The rule is especially strict in Georgia and Eastern Europe. In Western Europe people often give a dozen roses and see nothing wrong with even numbers, so if a foreign friend brings an even bouquet, it is just a cultural difference.

Does the colour matter too?

Some folk beliefs link yellow flowers to separation, though that belief is fading. Red stands for love, white for tenderness and respect.
