In folk belief whoever sits at the corner of the table will not marry for seven years. It is one of the best-known superstitions and a favourite joke at Georgian feasts.
What does the superstition say?
The corner of the table is said to keep you single, often for exactly seven years. Young women are warned most often, but the rule applies to everyone.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, and very convenient ones. Some say it does not count if you are already married, or if the host seated you there. Others believe sitting at the corner means the opposite: you will soon have a corner, a home, of your own.
Where does it come from?
The exact origin is unknown. It may simply have been a practical rule: the corner seat is awkward, your legs hit the table leg, and it is harder to join the conversation.
