In folk belief lending or giving money after sunset takes the household's prosperity out of the door. So many people only hand over money in the morning or during the day.
What does the superstition say?
Money given in the evening is said either not to come back or to take the home's financial peace with it. By the same logic, some people won't even repay a debt in the evening.
- Lend money during the day
- Repay debts in the morning
- Put money on the table rather than hand to hand
Why put money on the table?
In folk belief passing money directly from hand to hand passes on energy and can cause a quarrel. So money is placed on the table and picked up from there.
Where does it come from?
The exact origin is unknown, but the logic is easy to guess: at the end of the day people are tired, counting money in the dark used to be hard, and deals made in the evening were easily forgotten. Lending in daylight is simply more sensible.
