In folk belief a bird flying into the house brings news. Some see it as a bad sign, others as a messenger of good change.
Good sign or bad?
Birds were long seen as messengers from above, so one flying into a house was taken as news. Some families meet it with worry, but in many traditions it is simply news, and it may well be happy news.
Which bird was it?
In folk tradition the meaning depends on the bird: a swallow means kindness and family happiness, a sparrow small news, a dove peace. So first look at who has come to visit.
- Swallow: kindness and family happiness
- Sparrow: small news
- Dove: peace
What should you do?
The main thing is to let the bird out gently: open a window, switch off lights in other rooms and let it find its own way. Folk belief agrees that letting a bird go calmly keeps the news good.
